Along with the Sassi of Matera, the Park of the Rupestrian Churches has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, offering some of the most spectacular rock scenery of the world, so fascinating as the landscapes of Cappadocia.

Known in Italian as  ‘Parco della Murgia Materana’, its landscape, made up of layers of soft rock, is criss-crossed by ravines and characterised by deep canyons, grottoes, gorges and cliffs.  The Park consists of more than 150 rock churches, narrating centuries of spirituality. Some of the worship places of the area date back to the Roman period and house extraordinary frescoes. They also boast beautiful architectonic features such as apsides, quatrefoiled columns, capitals and vaults, which are made even more beautiful by small domes.  A natural beauty and spiritual experience you don’t want to miss!
