This house bears witness to the presence of the great Spanish artist José Ortega in Matera and enhances Matera’s unique craft tradition.  Your cultural tour in the 2019 European Capital of Culture cannot end without a visit to the House of Ortega.  Once a Longobards fortress, located within some suggestive scenery, it houses twenty polychrome bas-reliefs made by the Spanish painter in 1975 in Matera, using the most popular technique of local handicraft: paper mache.  The ceramics of Giuseppe Mitarotonda and a variety of hand-crafted products make this house even more beautiful and interesting to visit, expressing the mutual relationship between art and ancient crafts.
